Tips for Personalizing Your Mailings
with Photo Postage Stamps
Photo postage
stamps have taken advantage of the digital revolution
by allowing users to create stamps that feature any photograph
they desire. The United States Postal Service has
licensed a number of companies to produce postage stamps for
them and some (the most well known of which is stamps.com) will
allow users to upload photographs to their service which can
then be used as on the image portion of the postage
stamp. In order to take full advantage of photo postage
stamps, it is necessary to choose the proper
photograph. PhotoStamps.com:

A good photograph for use in photo postage
stamps is one that is fairly simple and devoid of fine
detail. The reason for this requirement is to make sure
that the photograph you choose will still look good when shrunk
down to postage stamp size. Close up photographs of
people, pets, well known structures or landmarks make great
photo postage stamps, whereas crowded group photos and/or
excessively busy photos with an enormous amount of detail are
not the best candidates.
To print photo stamps, you must use a company that is
licensed by the United States Postal Service to distribute
custom photo stamps. One such company is PhotoStamps.com
If you are using your photo postage stamps for only personal
use (in other words, you are not using the stamps for a
business purpose) be sure to include a photo that matches the
occasion. One popular use of photo postage stamps is to
send holiday greeting cards. Including a photo of
something seasonal is a great way to add your own personal
touch to your holiday correspondence. If sending birth
announcements, it is a good idea to include a picture of the
newborn to be used on the photo postage stamps.

It is possible to either print your own photo
postage stamps (using software supplied by the vendor)
or to have the stamps sent to your house. If you choose
to print your own, make sure that your printer can handle the
fine detail. Also make sure that the complete stamp
prints--the postal service will not deliver your letter if your
custom stamps do not contain the electronic identification tag
that must be present on all printed postage stamps.
